Cork Institute of Technology is comprised of two constituent Faculties and three constituent Colleges. The constituent Faculties are Engineering and Science; and Business and Humanities. The constituent Colleges are the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, the CIT Cork School of Music and the National Maritime College of Ireland.

The RTD work for the Aqua-Pulse project is carried out in the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis. (CAPPA).

CAPPA is funded by Enterprise Ireland under the Applied Research Enhancement [ARE] programme and commenced work in July 2008.  Photonics is a key strand of the CIT's strategic research plan.  CAPPA forms part of the Photonics Research Cluster along with the Photonic Device Dynamics group and the Astronomy & Instrumentation Group.  Both groups and the centre itself are part of the Institute's Department of Applied Physics & Instrumentation.

The direction of CAPPA's work is industry-led and as a result takes a direct and applied focus.  The centre is staffed with people with either direct industrial experience and or experience of the academic-industrial interface.  In collaborations with industrial partners, including entrepreneurs, start-ups, SMEs and Multi-Nationals, CAPPA's goal is to meet the customer's needs from both a technical and project standpoint.

CAPPA naturally has strong links to the fundamental research of CIT’s Photonics Research Cluster and in a wider sense to the critical mass of photonics work at the Tyndall National Institute through the CIT@Tyndall initiative. CAPPA also represents CIT in the PiFAS SFI SRC which is led by Tyndall and works towards developing and supporting photonics research in Ireland.

CAPPA is staffed by researchers and engineers with either direct industrial experience and/or experience of academic-industrial collaboration. As fits the scope of the centre’s work the staff has a wide range of backgrounds and experience across the physical and chemical sciences.
